If you have a legitimate medical condition whereby you experience post-traumatic stress and you cannot function in a public setting, seeing a medical professional is a much better solution for yourself in the long-term than going to a "safe space." A "safe space" is not designed to treat medical conditions. Be sensitive, be caring, but understand and respect the wishes of others. It’s common sense to avoid topics that you know an individual is sensitive about, and if you don’t know, it’s common sense to respect their desire not to discuss that topic when they tell you not to discuss it. What you say should be your choice and yours alone. Requiring trigger warnings would limit freedom of speech, and that’s not what our country is about. Using trigger warnings should be at the sole discretion of an individual- not an entire university-wide policy. Like safe spaces, I disagree with a university using trigger warnings. Do we really want to make a disagreement even more heated? Is this what you thought a "safe space" was? A space for people who do not want to face the fact that in the real world, discrimination is going to happen and that whatever opinions you may have, will be challenged? What good is hiding from discrimination going to do? We need to tackle the issue head on to resolve it! What good is sheltering yourself from opinions that differ from your own going to do? We need to debate our opinions with each other in order to solve the issues at hand- ignoring the other side is only going to raise tensions. While safe spaces used to be places to protect the LGBT community from anti-LGBT attitudes, the concept evolved into what are now spaces to shelter any individual from discrimination and any opinion that differs from their own.
